PostSubject: [ACCEPTED] Charlamagne - Holy Paly   Tue Apr 08, 2008 11:11 am

Charlamagne - Holy Paly 41/20

I am PVP spec but my healing stats are still pretty good.
Unbuffed I have 1760 +healing, 9888 mana, 23% crit chance on holy spells. After AI, MotW and kings, plus my elixir and food buff, this character will have close to 1900+healing if not more. I use a libram of mending macro so i almost always have an extra 22 mp5.

Raid Experience: I've played this game off and on since it came out. My raid experience includes MC, BWL, Karazhan, some ZA as well as many world bosses. The only boss i haven't been able to beat with a raid group was the final boss of BWL. It was a complicated fight, and I was just a peon in the guild so I was unable to give input on the fight.

Agreement to raiding rules: I understand that the people in charge of raids want what is best for the raid team, and that is fine with me. I can make all the times listed for raiding, and probably a few other nights a week i'll be online for kara runs or pvp, whatever you guys are doing.

Major Upgrades: This characters focus is essentially pvp. But paladins do better in arena with the high end gear than S3. I wear pvp gear right now, it gives me a higher crit chance but i'm missing out on mp5. I think I would end up making a raiding set for pve also. I feel my character is pretty powerful as he is though, I'd only roll on an item that is a clear upgrade or if nobody else needs. A +450 healing mace would be nice with stats and mp5.

Guild History: This character has really only been a part of 1 other guild and that is Kill Order. I really like Kill Order, but their raid time is pushing the boundry of late for me (a few hours later than you guys). Also, when i joined their guild I went prot, and I really want to focus on pvp.

Why I want to join Damage Done: I was browsing the gorgonosh forum and it looks like a good opportunity to join a good group of people. I want to progress into the end game content, not only for the gear but because it's also fun and a good challenge. I'd like to be part of a winning team. Let's kick Illidans ass.

I would be a good addition to your guild because I know how to play my class and I have the same goals in mind you guys do. The raid times are good too.

Thanks for taking the time to read my application. If you have any questions please let me know by responding here, messaging me in game or contacting me via e-mail. blummer@gmail.com

(Not yet updated with my S3 helm which is already gemmed and enchanted, also has my pvp pants on isntead of healing pants)

Thank you for the app, it is being reviewed. You can expect follow-up questions in this thread from officers and members. Some of the questions may seem like nitpicking and overly stated, but keep in mind we're looking for someone reliable that will show up regularly (we only have one holy paladin with reliable attendance). We want someone who can play a paladin and not feel like just "another guy pressing the heal keys."

Here are some examples of what I'm talking about:
  • If a fight requires extremely effective dispelling, do you have a good raid UI (Grid, Healbot, something else) that allows you see and quickly Cleanse off the debuffs? If you don't have a good raid UI, can you quickly adapt and get one based upon suggestions that our other players give?
  • Can you adapt to fights that have non-standard mechanics while still doing your primary job? For example, if you were asked to click a cube in Magtheridon, would you be able to do it properly when its your turn, but still heal when you aren't on click duty? (This is a simple example, fights like Archimonde are much more difficult and require some practice.)
  • Do you understand that if I (or an officer) ask you why something happened, that it's not a personal attack (even if we sound angry), and we're looking for an explanation and not an excuse? We know people mess up, it's learning from the mistakes and not habitually repeating that is our goal.
  • Do you bring consumables like potions, flasks (assuming you're exalted with the proper reps, you can get flask marks for free when they're available, otherwise you're expected to supply your own flasks or elixirs), food and weapon buffs? Yes it can be expensive, but it's a part of raiding.
  • Will you try to check the forums at least once every day or two to check up on new information? Will you ensure that you are at least familiar with the basics of a boss's strategies before we engage him (either by reading our personal strategy forum or checking out a site like Wowwiki or Bosskillers)?
  • Can you maintain buffs effectively with a mod like PallyPower?
  • Playing in the arena is perfectly fine, we have a couple players with 1850-2000+ rating, but can you ensure that you'll be ready for the raid on time and not trying to play your games at raid time?

Again, I want to reiterate that I'm not here to nitpick or tell you how to play the game, but there are expectations of every player and if you can meet these expectations, you will have a great time with Damage Done and get lots of loot to help you achieve your arena/personal goals in the game.

Thanks and best of luck.

Can you give me your opinion on Mp5 versus spell crit in high end PvE content?

We also have one very active ret paladin, but assuming he didn't come to the raid, would you be able to keep a judgement of whatever renewed on the boss (assuming the fight mechanics allow it) and still put out decent numbers healing wise?

-I completely understand what you mean. There is a major difference between someone who knows how to play a paladin and someone who doesn't. I think that's why there is so much QQ about pallys in arena. Yes we have our downsides but there are ways around everything. I think I do a lot more than just push heal keys, hopefully you will get the chance to make your own opinion about that. Also, I don't mind people asking me specific questions about my gameplay or even giving advice. I want to learn and get better.

A good raid UI is essentail for anything over 10 man. I don't have one installed atm but i'm firmiliar with addons. (open for suggestions for raid addons. I will get omen and deadly boss mods definately) They are easy to use and learn. That being said, I hope I wouldn't be in charge of dispels all that much. Pally heals are slow to cast and the constant GCD usage of cleanse makes it hard to heal too.
That being said, i'm confident in my ability to utilize all of my abilities. In arena, I have to be quick with cleanse but I also have to pay attention to what i'm cleansing. I don't just spam cleanse hotkey because what if UA is on them? Why cleanse something that debuffs melee attack on myself when I could be healing my ally or using LoS to my advantage, etc. Sometimes it's worth the mana and sometimes it isn't.

Yes. I have a good awareness of my character, where he is and where the enemies are. Being mobile and casting spells is no problem. Being on click patrol is also no big deal. For example, I had no problem making a target macro in the karazhan fight to attack the demon chains and keep our party members up. Just 1 example.

  • Do you understand that if I (or an officer) ask you why something happened, that it's not a personal attack (even if we sound angry), and we're looking for an explanation and not an excuse? We know people mess up, it's learning from the mistakes and not habitually repeating that is our goal.

I go through this myself in arena. I understand that when you ask me questions about what happened, your goal is for us to get better. I would never take offense to this unless it was brought up in a very rude manner. I also feel that I would be able to explain to you what happened in an effective manner.

  • Do you bring consumables like potions, flasks (assuming you're exalted with the proper reps, you can get flask marks for free when they're available, otherwise you're expected to supply your own flasks or elixirs), food and weapon buffs? Yes it can be expensive, but it's a part of raiding.

I like to get the most out of my character that I possibly can. Even when I do heroics I bring consumables, so I would definately have them for raiding. I currently use, elixer of major healing (+50 healing), Major mageblood elixir, Superior mana oil and I cook my own fishsticks for the extra 44 healing. (I can also cook many other foods if anyone in the raid needs some). I'm not firmiliar with the marks. Could you explain those to me please?

  • Will you try to check the forums at least once every day or two to check up on new information? Will you ensure that you are at least familiar with the basics of a boss's strategies before we engage him (either by reading our personal strategy forum or checking out a site like Wowwiki or Bosskillers)?

I have no problem researching the basics of a fight before we go in. Also I don't mind checking the forums as long as there are updates.

  • Can you maintain buffs effectively with a mod like PallyPower?

I've never used a mod to maintain buffs and i'm pretty good at keeping up with them. But like I said earlier, I am open to any mods you guys would like me to install.

  • Playing in the arena is perfectly fine, we have a couple players with 1850-2000+ rating, but can you ensure that you'll be ready for the raid on time and not trying to play your games at raid time?

Raid times are scheduled. I like to be prompt and get things started when they are supposed to. I would never intentionally make 24 people wait for me if I can help it.

Again, I want to reiterate that I'm not here to nitpick or tell you how to play the game, but there are expectations of every player and if you can meet these expectations, you will have a great time with Damage Done and get lots of loot to help you achieve your arena/personal goals in the game.

Thanks and best of luck.

Thank you.

Spell Crit vs Mp5.

From my personal understanding of these two stats, it seems that they are situational.
Spell crit keeps my mana from running out. I'm not sure what kind of damage i'm going to be healing through, but assuming i'm spamming FoL on tank with the occasional Holy Light, I can keep most of my mana pool for a very long time with a high spell crit. If I use divine illumination and lower city prayer book, I can heal 2500+ health for ~30 mana on a crit. not bad
One of the downsides of spell crit in a raid is overhealing. You can't rely on a crit, and you want to keep the tank at full health so sometimes you don't get the full benefit of spell crits.

Mp5 comes in handy for fights when I will be going oom. It's also more reliable. If I had to choose between the two, i'd take more Mp5 for raiding, but alas i am in pvp gear. I also posted earlier that I use a macro to switch between libram of mending and blessed book of nagrand. This gives me additional mp5 considering I can keep the 30second buff up. I also use elixirs and mana oil to help increase my somewhat low mp5.

Also, even if the ret pally joins us I try to keep a BoL on the MT's target. Sometimes I can't run back up and hit it within the 30 seconds, but then I just rejudge if/when I have the time.

Wait... and you play a paladin? ... I'm confused. But, no pallies would ever try to do something as sensible as that?!? What is going on.

Thanks for the well-written responses.

I do have one small point to bring up. Sometimes people think I'm "rude" because of the direct way I ask questions or point out mistakes. Nothing irks me more than having to FIND out who made the mistake because nobody will admit it. I'm not trying to say that every raid is a nightmare with me, I'm just letting you know that often you have 20+ other people standing around wanting to know how we can make sure that if we wipe on something easy, it won't happen again.

Can you understand the difference between me saying, "Charlamange, that was really stupid," and "Charlamagne, you're a f***ing idiot," and not get offended when I use the former (I won't use the latter unless you actually turn out to be one <3).

Also, some fights actually do require you to Cleanse a lot (Vashj for example, if Cleansing is actually better than healing because the DOT is so much damage, and we frequently have had paladins doing it also while healing), although in MH/BT most of the stuff we see from bosses and trash requires a decurse (mage/druid). Some fights also require you to throw efficiency out the window and lob Holy Light instead, drinking potions as much as possible (yes you can complain that you need a shadow priest, we have two). Those fights are discussed in the strategy section, or you can just ask Secondary about them.

Also, we hunter bash regularly. Will you help us?

I can admit to mistakes and I have thick skin. I don't think we'll have a problem there. I go through the same thing in arena. WHO THE F*(& wasn't attacking the healer. etc. it's all in the heat of battle. no worries.

And I know some fights require cleanse. All I was trying to illustrate is you can't ask too much out of a paladin healer because our heals are slow and we are locked in place while casting. If i'm on cleanse duty that's fine, but I'll need 2.5 seconds for a holy light plus GCD. (i try to keep the buff up for a 2 second holy light but it's not always possible). In sticky situations there is always divine favor/holy shock/FoL.

I notice a lot of PvP enchants on your gear atm, which makes sense cause you PvP. If you join DD, will you be enchanting your gear for PvE?

Do you have the rep in Thrallmar to get the Healing giff? If not, is that something you will work on?

First priority is to make a completely seperate set of PvE gear that will be gemmed and enchanted for PvE. Yes I have the thrallmar enchant on my new S3 helm. My current gear will stay enchanted how it is though unless it's an upgrade for pvp AND pve.

Well, i'm not 100% sure yet because I haven't done top end raiding. I'll mostly be gemming for +healing and mana regen, through mp5 or crit. Int is also great because it adds to my base healing and gives me more mana and higher crit. I'd like to see how the fights work before I do research into the specific gems though.

Well your gear is a little sub-par of where we are at, but you seem to know a good bit about your class, my advice would be to ask for help on anything you might be unsure about.

I'm the only active Holy pally in the guild right now, so I'll be keeping an eye on you. Smile

I've seen the site. I mostly checked out that kind of stuff when I was tanking. I've got some spare time though I should read up on pve raiding as holy pally just incase they have some good stuff.

I usually like to grill the new guys, but open season seems to have been declared on your post, so I'll keep this brief and sweet-

Do you have any experience playing other classes?

MFK: Holyhoof, Byfield, Comotosis?

Yes I do. At lvl 70 the only other class I've played is warrior, both prot and MS. I had a lvl 60 priest very long ago, and i have numerous lvl 30-40 alts for pretty much every class. Other than that most of my knowledge of the other classes come from who I fight with/against in the arena.

Cool beans. Two more (highly related) questions sprung to mind:

What strategies do you use against RMP and EURO? What do you, the healer, find yourself looking for most of the time during these matches?
