| Yes, I realize it's like, years after it came out, but I finally beat Half Life 2. First, please don't put Episode 1 spoilers here in case I ever buy/play it. Second, the reason it took me so long is the following: - I played it when it first came out pretty heavily and was almost all of the way through the game (I don't remember exactly where I was, but it was within the last 2-4 hours).
- My PC failed miserably about that time and I was unable to recover the save files.
- I reformatted my PC and started to replay it again but just couldn't bring myself to play it that much because I was so frustrated having to do it again.
- I am the absolute worst person when it comes to jump-out-at-you type cheap scares. I'll play horror games and watch horror movies, but I tend to not like the genre (although I do have a very fond place for cerebral horror like The Ring or Silent Hill 2, which didn't have to jump out every few seconds to spook you). Don't ask me how I ever beat Doom 3 because that game is a perpetual monster closet in the dark.
- So because I don't like cheap scares, I always hated the scripted sequences with a bunch of headcrabs that fell on you, I hated the stupid uber headcrabs, especially the creepy-sounding poisonous ones, and those freaking uber zombies that leap at you with shrieks.
- Basically, the biggest thing that has since caused me to not want to replay it was Ravenholm. That place is hella freaky.
- Also, my PC's issues have made it difficult to play graphically intensive games smoothly.
- I finally just installed it in Jelly's PC (mainly to see how well TF2 played on a good machine), but I decided to just bite the bullet and see if I could finish it. It took me about 4-5 days to beat.
It does reaffirm my belief that it's one of the better games I've played, surpassing even the original. Physics puzzles may be fairly elementary in some cases but damn they are cool when you realize that you actually have to do stuff like use air barrels to move terrain around and various weight-related tasks. No, I haven't played Portal, either, so no need to tell me that I'm really missing out there, because I know. | |
