I have to say that I am proud of the "youth" of America for getting out and voting. Seems like something so simple to do and yet it looks like the 18-25 bracket will shatter some records this year. I think the correct choice was made and in the end I believed Obama was the right person for the job. I did not give him my overwhelming support from the start, like PB/Galt/Damacus did but after some time, thought and research I came around.

There is so much work to do but for now it's pretty amazing to be a part of history. My father who is 65 was recanting a story to me this morning on my way to work about how amazed he is by the public support(from EVERY race) for Obama. He recalled being a young man and traveling to the south only to see segregated water fountains and bathrooms. The fact that a change of this magnitude came during our lifetimes should humble everyone, Republican and Democrat.

It's incredible and its historic. He's already chosen Rahm Emanuel, a House "bully" for the Chief-of-Staff job (typically a "bully" type of job). There's a big rumor he'll pick Bobby Kennedy Jr for the head of the EPA which would be HUGE as this guy is a serious environmental pro (and a big Clinton ally).

I'm really looking forward to Obama's first choices and will give him the benefit of the doubt until I see reason otherwise. We can only hope the Secret Service is on full detail at all times to watch for the crazies.

However, just for the record, the current numbers show that youth was up 1 point from 2004, African American was up a little, and Hispanic vote was down.

Bush has pledged to really help Obama hit the ground running and I'm hoping that all goes according to plan.

I supported Ron Paul and John Edwards from the start. I didn't like Obama at the start simply because he seemed like a celebrity candidate and I had never really heard him talk. It wasn't until the primary debates started that I learned more about Obama and became aware of Paul's chances and decided to change who I was supporting By the time our primaries came around here, I voted for Obama. After seeing the republican primary debates and the way they threw out Ron Paul's "crazy ideas" let me know that I needed to start looking at the democratic candidates because I wasn't going to vote for any of the assholes that were "winning" the republican debates. I knew that a vote in the primaries for Paul was a wasted vote and after I came to the conclusion that Obama is the one who should and could win, I got behind him. I wasn't someone, and I don't think the other people you mentioned were either, who was star struck by Obama from the start and blindly followed any claim he made. That being said, I think I kind of have a man crush on him now after that acceptance speech.

cheers

According to the articles I've read today the youth vote is further up than 1 point from 2004 and the amount of youth who crossed the line is way up.

I want to see what Obama does with his 4 first Shel, give him a chance. You have to have him now anyway, open up and be honest about the job he does. Who knows he may be the next best thing since porn on the internet.

I only followed Obama because he likes to kill babies and rape rich white people financially which just so happen to be my favorite past-times!

Does anyone else think that the giant stage and big outdoor event will become the new model for presidential election celebrations? McCain's crowd looked paltry even though he obviously has more supporters than those that were at the hotel with him. The difference in location (small private hotel vs. giant outdoor rally) made a big difference on the image, which is something I think McCain's campaign also didn't do very well sometimes.

I'm not sure we will ever see a political climate that allowed him to be a great president again. In my opinion, the cold war and a very defined enemy in the world. Maybe if China gets on the other-side of the slope of their industrial revolution. Other than the rampant debt rolled up during his term (I think) he did a good job.

edit: My edit screwed up the last sentence so...re-edit.

Thank you Malaese, but when you say his situation made him great, isn't that true of most presidents? It's not so much they themselves that are great, but how they fixed and overcame the situations that arised during their terms (i.e. FDR and WWII, Lincoln and Civil War/Slavery, Reagan and the Cold War)

No, some presidents are actually "great" individuals and can make the best of any situation.

Also, Reagan was not a "great" president. Its a joke to say he was.

I asked "Why" did you like him, not that you heard he's considered republican jesus. This goes back to that comprehension thing you've had problems with lately.

In a nutshell, I'm saying there's no more Dragons to slay as big as the Dragons during his time, in my opinion.

What the fuck is your problem? Can you make one god damn post without completely insulting me? I'm trying to have a civil discussion about why I think Reagan was a great president, is that so hard?

\boggle

If you call pretending to be a "conservative" and then embarking on massive military-keynesian deficit spending, "amazing." Ok. Ever heard of cognitive dissonance?

Personally, I call it at minimum misleading, if not outright lying.

Maybe that's just me?

Speaking of lying. Remember that whole tax-cuts-pay-for-themselves bullshit? Yea about that. That whole idea REALLY fucked up the political discourse in this country. If there is anything that he did that outright damaged the minds of Americans, it was perpetuating this myth (note: it is a myth in reality -- in theory it is possible). To use Mankiw's verbiage for supporters of self-financed tax cuts, Reagan was a "charlatan and crank."

In other areas,
I would give him credit for jump starting deregulation. But wait, nope. That was Carter.
I would give him credit for breaking inflation. But wait, nope. That was Volcker, who was appointed by Carter. (Note that Volcker advises Obama now.)
etc...

You wanna know why he was great? Alright

1. He busted the balls of the unions
2. His tax cuts are one of the causes of the '90s economy boom
3. He tried to kick people off disability who probably weren't really disabled
4. He fucking rolled the Commies
5. He made it illegal for people to hire fence hoppers

And for everything bad he did, he atleast had the balls to admit it. When asked about the national debt that rose during his presidency, he said "It was one of the biggest mistakes of my presidency."

So fuck you, Galt
