Also, marriage predates the bible. Marriage isn't native to Christianity and so the bible shouldn't be the marriage rule book in the eyes of the law. Its about equal rights and non-discrimination. If you choose to use the bible as your definition for marriage then that is ok but outside of what you do, your religious beliefs should have no influence.

It is unfortunate that you can't see your efforts to "change the constitution" based on religious beliefs is profoundly wrong.

That is where I have to disagree Galt. I want the atmosphere that my Family and I live in to be the closest thing that I can to what my moral values are, regardless of where those values come from. Just as I am sure you probably want the place you live to give people the right to marry because that is where your values are.

When your moral values impede on another individuals rights as a human being there is a problem.
I see nothing wrong with having these morals within your home and your religion, regardless of my disagreement with them. Both of those things are private and personal and everyone has a right to their own beliefs. When it comes to public interest though then yes, I do feel that morales leaning against gay marriages are out of place, since they have every right as human beings to share in the benefits that marriage entails (lolol>?).

well, for one, that you say being gay is a "choice."

after you hit puberty and all that shit, when did you decide to start being attracted to girls or that you liked a different kind of porno from your gay best friend? Have you ever talked to him about his "choice" to "become" gay? And lastly, have you ever thought "why would someone choose to be gay when there's such a negative view on it from society's overall perspective?"

I mean, "choosing" to be gay would have to be one of the stupidest things someone could do considering the amount of hate-mongering, stereotyping, and stigma they'll have to deal with. And let's not mention what it does to their families, friends, and loved ones. I mean, "choosing" to be gay is along the same lines of asking to be discriminated against, picked on, made fun of, ostracized, etc. whatever the fuck you want to call it.

Explain to me why the majority of an entire population of people would "choose" to live a life like that, if you would.

p.s. also I'm not dumb enough to believe that not every gay person on the planet is ostracized by their family, friends, or society as a whole, just thought I'd point that out.

^those!

I got distracted after I typed that out and posted it late, got caught between a few other posts in that thread.

I don't know why people would choose to be gay, I don't know why people would choose to commit crimes when they know they would be punished for them. It's just human nature I guess, some people are influenced in ways that make them think they like members of the same sex.

Goddamn forums ate my post... Evil or Very Mad

Short version: I'm surprised that the two of you are surprised. That is a fairly standard reaction from some religious groups. Hell, Damacus, you lived with Xeos for awhile and he shares the same viewpoint.

Somehow I don't think there is much choice on the genetic level =p
Just like I didn't choose to be this sexy, many gay people don't choose to be gay.

No, because you're straight.

Pretend there's a gay man here. Here's what he would say to that statement:

Preempting Shel's post:

There are dozens of examples in the animal world of species that exhibit homosexual relations. I'm not just talking "dominance games" or "pre-adolescent play." Full blown homosexual intercourse occurs. Otters, Dolphins, Wild Dogs, Monkeys, and Parrots are just some I can list off the top of my head. Google it.

There are also dozens of societies that not only practice homosexual relations, but have instituted the construct of marriage between people of the same sex, and have done so for THOUSANDS of years. Native Americans are famous for it, as were tribes in South America. India has a very similar custom, as do some of the Central Asian cultures. Pacific Islanders are big on reversing the masculine/feminine dichotomy of the traditional nuclear household, and African hieroglyphics allude to homosexual intercourse in religious rituals dating back for millenia.
