PVE Talent Spec : Holy CoH (17/44/0)

Armory Link : http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Gorgonnash&n=Grakk

Stats (Unbuffed)

HP: 7501

Healing: 2089
Mp5 (while casting): 220
Hit: 0%
Crit: 11.98% (heals)
Haste: 0%

Do you have The Medallion of Karabor? No, but I only need the vials to complete the chain. I do not have a 2min PvP trinket but I will get one if it is required.

A shadow resist set for Mother Sharhaz? Night’s End (back +40), and I have the materials for making SoulGuard Leggings (+72) and would work toward getting more pieces, including paying for my own Hearts of Darkness if need-be.

What is your trinket set-up? Do you need any obvious upgrades? Direbrew Hops and Earring of Soulful Meditation, macro linked to Greater Heal Rank 7.

Where are you from? English native speaker, Austin Texas. Also speak a bit of Japanese.

How old are you? 29

Do you have a mic/headset for vent? yes

Do you have Grid, XPerl, PallyPower, or some other UI that helps you buff, pick up loose aggro, etc? yes

Raid Experience Pre-BC, my first guild had MC/ZG on farm status. I had completed BWL 2-3 times before BC came out, but wasn’t farming it regularly. I single-handedly one-shotted Mr. Bigglesworth in Naxx. Post BC release, my guild farmed all heroics, KZ, ZA, Mag, Gruul, and was just starting to farm MH. We were working on Gorefiend in BT prior to my transfer to a new guild (see below for reason/history). I have done a few bosses in TK and SSC, but not regularly and have not killed Vashj or Kael.

Guild History I started on Korgath (PvP) with Dawgs of War in pre-BC. The guild dissolved and I transferred to Gorgonnash with some friends. I joined Conspiracy and learned to do KZ there. When that guild dissolved, some of the officers formed Narcism where I participated heavily in BT, ZA, and MH learning. I took a hiatus from the game about 4 months ago for a ~2 month work assignment (will not be repeated!) and thus missed some of the BT progression of Narcism beyond Gorefiend. I then joined Iron Knights upon my return when Narcism became raid-inactive.

Acknowledgment of agreement to our rules and times I understand the rules and raid times and could participate at least twice a week as required. I do not mind being benched if needed or making accommodations to benefit the group.

Preparedness for the next scheduled raid, unless stated here Rumors of my unpreparedness have been greatly exaggerated by Illidan. (Yes, I’m prepared)

Reason(s) for applying Having seen what a good group can do in MH, I must say I am rather disappointed at my current guild’s progression. While we have managed to down Archimonde once, the pace of learning was painfully slow compared to what I experienced in Narcism. I did not feel that the people in the old guild were fundamentally any different, but the commitment to success does not appear to be flourishing.

In addition, the “kick the dog” approach to group management does not work for me. Clearly, discipline and corrective action are appropriate to group success when the problem is not being resolved by more diplomatic means. I have no problem sitting out if I f-up. But making the entire guild feel like actual failures does not improve morale or motivate people to succeed. A lack of ample substitution and standby players has also contributed to the wipe grinding that is surely an understandable irritant to this particular GM. My apologies to anyone acquainted with him, but I find the Gunnery Sergeant Hartman approach to management neither effective nor worth $15/month, even if not delivered in shrill tirades of emasculating derision.

A final point on my current guild’s philosophy and why I want to leave: there is a lack of willingness to take advice from more experienced players. For the record, I am not one of those players giving advice, but I see it happen. Instead the “this is how we do it if you don’t like it I can always gkick you” attitude is the status quo, even in uncleared content. This seems counterintuitive considering the nominal focus on group progression.

I have heard good things about Damage Done from friends I made in Narcism. If you need a reference, please contact Hackr. At the risk of brown-nosing too much, your reputation precedes you as funny and reasonable, but still serious about raiding and having fun doing it. I want to be a part of that.

Final Thoughts, why you would be a good addition to Damage Done
There are several reasons I consider myself to be a good group member and a good candidate for joining Damage Done.

First, I have not respec’ed to any non-holy build (other than to correct for talent changes) since level 60. Leveling to 70 in BC was a little painful when I had to grind quests on my own. But the time I saved by building one set of gear instead of two as well as the friends I made by being a pocket priest during the first few weeks of BC were, in my opinion, well worth it. My commitment to healing is permanent. I am The Shoveller. I shovel well.

Second, even in my current state of disgruntlement, I am the major source of raid potions and common elixirs for the guild and regularly contribute them at my own expense (in gather time and gold). I find the sight of a well stocked bank satisfying knowing that because of me, we can continue to wipe on Azgalor and not run out of mana potions.

Third, my commitment to raiding is only gear driven to the extent that it allows me to see new content. While obviously there is pride in being the healiest healer or the tankiest tank or the rogue that dies the most, ultimately I realize that the only true values in the game are making friends and seeing new stuff. When I first started Karazhan, I didn’t want to kill Maiden of Virtue primarily so I could loot Shard of the Virtuous. I wanted to kill Maiden so I could take a screenshot of me looking up her skirt. These are the moments that make it all worthwhile.

And finally: I know when to shut up, I know when to push-to-talk for that patrol sneaking up on our inebriated tank, I know how to follow directions and I know how to watch trainer videos on YouTube. Combine that with being a reasonable, friendly human being and watching out for my mates, and I think you’ve got a damn good reason to hire me.

Thanks for the opportunity to apply. Hopefully this application will reflect the time I put into making it. I hope it was worth the 3 minutes it probably took to read and that it reflects my commitment as a serious potential guild contributor.

Your gear looks pretty fair, but I have the first two questions that I know our priests will ask:

1. Why the heal/mp5 gems over heal/spirit gems?
2. Are you working on getting the badge offhand from 2.3? It's a really fantastic piece that's a 10 healing upgrade from the Soothing Sapphire when you're talented right.

Edit: Also curious as to why you have 0/2 Healing Focus and 3/3 Blessed Recovery.

Well, I was there from the beginning in BT and made almost every raid. MH and ZA went smoothly from the start since none of the bosses aside from Archimonde are particularly hard anyway. If I had the records to show it i think you'd find I was attending the Archimonde attempts quite well, even after 3-4 weeks of wiping on him. Any absence after that was due to my work hiatus which I have already explained.

Edit: just realized I didn't address the other two items. Yes, I have badges for the badge off-hand. Probably will buy it this week. I suppose you're right about the spec change from Blessed Recovery. I've got no issues switching to it.

Very well put together application. Quite wordy, but in the words of Comotosis: "I like the cut of your jib."

From your application, it appears you would fit very well in our "Grumpy Elitists" section in vent that a few of us call home.

I'm looking forward to seeing some healer criticism. Couple quick questions from me in this area, as I'm sure you'll be questioned more by our priests, namely Ichaerus.. For gems, why mp5 over spirit? And do you intend on getting Boar's Speed on your boots?

With a quick look-over your gear, it appears that it is quite a bit below par (9 kara pieces?). However, with 3.0 coming out and raiding becoming easier until the opening of WotLK, and the fact most of our raiders have most of the gear - this could probably be easily fixed. In addition, with the opening of WotLK and the gear reset that will take place..there becomes less significance on current gear.

Damage Done is currently desperately seeking to increase our pool of useful and dedicated members. I would personally love to see how you perform. If your game-play is reflective of the effort you put into your application, I'm sure you'll do fine. Smile

Edit: So a few posts were put up before I finished typing this and I don't feel like revising. Ignore repeated information.

I think you misunderstood my post. I wasn't trolling you, I just honestly don't remember you. I was also wondering how you where there in the beginning since BT considering we started in T5 content as a guild not T6. I'll check my WWS records.

On a side note we only really got 2 solid weeks of attempts on Archimonde as our guilds biggest downfall was attendance.

Yeah sorry if I misinterpreted you Honed. Hopefully the passage of time has not inflated my ego to the point of massive hyperbole. But damn it sure *seemed* like I was raiding a lot. Smile

One thing I failed to mention in my app is that I understand there are people out there who play the class better than I do. I am not above taking advice from people who clearly outgear, outperform or out-theorycraft me. I'll never get better if I get stuck in my ways. So even if I'm not accepted, I welcome your critiques as it can only be good for me.

I really like your app, and even if you don't get in, I will be pointing others to it as an example of what a good app looks like.

That being said, your chances of getting in are pretty strong. You may not have the best gear or theorycraft, but you seem like a pretty intelligent guy. Gear and accurate information are probably the two easiest things to upgrade in a player. I would like to apologize for the brevity of my post (lol), and the lack of prose and courtesy, but I am in a hurry and I want to respond to your app as completely as possible. We are definitely looking for good CoH priests. Here goes:

Why did you choose your current spec? This build is a much better fit for CoH. You can drop 1 to 2 points out of Holy Specialization and into Healing Focus (you'll have 105% cast resistance with improved concentration aura) if you need to, or toss a point from Silent Resolve into Absolution, otherwise it is the definite "preferred" spec."

What are your thoughts on 3.0 and WotLK? Do you plan on continuing to stay as a holy (or disc) priest? If you have looked into any of the new skills/specs, what are the changes you are most interested in testing out?

Do not craft the Shadow Resist pants. We usually go with the SR Neck, Cloak, Boots, Girdle, and Wrists. The pants are probably your biggest stat loss on a single piece of gear. You really only need about 315 Shadow Resist when buffed with Shadow Protection. If accepted, you do not need to pay for your HoD's.

Can you post a screenshot of your UI?

As has already been noted, your gear is somewhat lacking. Some of it can be attributed to your lack of progression, but why haven't you made more of an effort in getting badge gear? The Bracers, Off-Hand, Ring, and Leggings (best in slot until Sunwell) are all massive upgrades for you. I realize you have been gone for a bit, and gear is fast becoming a non-issue (one month, one week!), but there are no further use for badges if you happen to have a stockpile laying around.

Your meta looks good, but all gems from this point on should be +10 spell haste and +11 healing +5 spirit or +10 spirit. I would consider re-gemming some of your better pieces of gear in such a manner. Boar's Speed is an absolute must (8 LPS, 8 Primal Earth, I can do the enchant) due to the relative low survivability of Holy Priests. Almost every class/spec should run with it, but it becomes much more of an issue when you are wearing cloth and have under 9k hp. You need the two minute pvp trinket.

Closing thoughts- I really appreciate the effort you put into your app. It goes a long way towards making a good first impression. Be around tonight at 6:00 server, although there may not be a raid spot for you. Why mining?

Thank you -Z- and all others who have had constructive comments!

This afternoon I swapped a few things around in my spec including dropping Lightwell and Blessed Recovery in favor of 2/2 healing focus. While in retrospect, I could dump a couple more points into Mental Agi, 3 talent points for conserving +25 mana /cast seems a little steep. Clearly this talent is designed for CoH but it seems a little pricey to max out when I do still throw a lot of flash heals. I will probably continue to tweak based on the good feedback I'm getting, but in the meantime, I do not usually end up with mana problems even in the BT fights I've done.

I think some very interesting changes have been made to the holy tree in particular for 3.0. The addition of desperate prayer as a spec'able talent will certainly help with boss event/spike damage so I am looking forward to that. Improved holy concentration will magnify the relevance of spell haste for priests which is an area I have not explored, but as CoH I will probably branch along Test of Faith and maxing Divine Providence. Probably I will try out the following and go from there:

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/priest/talents2.html?tal=50300221313000000000000000002350510303001505300500135100000000000000000000000000

My plan for the expansion is to stay holy. The first weeks of the expansion generally see an exodus of healers in an effort to grind levels, but because of that I am planning on staying healing to improve my desirability for groups.

UI Screenshot. Nothing fancy. I use Xperl for unit frames to make them a bit more visible (raid group boxes shown for clarity). Ecastingbar, DBM, and Omen serve me well enough for raiding.

Your points on gems and gear are duly noted and I will be working on replacing them as gold and time permit. Regardless of the application results, I appreciate the feedback.

Out of curiosity, where does your focus appear on your UI?

It looks a lot like mine, actually, before I scaled it down a lot.

Edit: Also, I'm not familiar with eCastingBar, but my bet is that Quartz is better. Also, a lot of healers will recommend you get Grid. I miss some things about Xperl's frames, but most of all I like the range checks it does.

Edit: Yeah, that's what I mean. I like Grid's range checks even though I miss some of Xperl's stuff.

So does Xperl. Grid is just smaller and less flashy and both basicly do the same things except Xperl has a few minor points over Grid as far as being able to show absolutely everything at once. But how many status changes does each class really need to monitor? The latest version has a Prayer of Mending tracker that actually displays where they are bouncing and which one belongs to you.

Everyone has pretty much said anything I would have so the rest will be purely based upon your personal performance.

My apologies to Damage Done for airing this here.

Quote :

My apologies to anyone acquainted with him, but I find the Gunnery Sergeant Hartman approach to management neither effective nor worth $15/month, even if not delivered in shrill tirades of emasculating derision.

I apologize if my military form of leadership has offended you in some way. I spent time in the army where this type of leadership was not only supported, but heavily stressed. Where I came from it was this type of team orientated leadership that taught young men and women not only to do their jobs, but to keep themselves and the person next to them alive. I know quite a few young men who didn't get to come home from the sand that shared your attitude and I apologize if you feel that this is some sort of shot at you but without the strong sense of unity and discipline I try to install in our raids, people die. It may be a video game, and by all means spend your 15$ how you want to, but where I learned to lead like this it was real people and real lives that could quickly end if ppl didn't pay attention.

I'm sure the ladies and gentlemen here are going to tell you that wiping is progressing if you're consistant in making some sort of progress either each week or each attempt. I find your comments about "lack of progression" rather disturbing as we went from 1/5 in Hyjal to 4/5 in 4 hours. Some people are rather new and it takes time to consistantly farm bosses of this calibur, every night is not going to be a one shot and ppl need to realize this.

I'd also like to point out that you sitting out raids was pushing for more diversity in the raiding group. I dont like carrying 8 priests to a hyjal raid, or any raid for that matter. I'd also like to point out that for most of your early to recent career in our guild, you sitting out was due to lack of gear. Sure you had t6 gloves, but blue shoulders dont cut it in Hyjal. Honestly with the gear makeup you did have before you aquired t4 then t5 shoulders from us as well as the teeth of gruul, I dont understand why Narcism was taking you to Hyjal.. You were on standby for healers that had put far more time and effort into the guild, as well as ppl who could carry the weight of their job easier. Our healing makeup allows me to take 6-7 healers to do these bosses, where some guilds take 8.

Per your comment about taking advice from more experienced players. Damage Dones guild master and /or raid leader was and is the one I ask advice and/or strategies of. Strategies and advice is greatly appreciated from those who do it in a professional clean cut way. No, I wouldn't take Hackrs opinion when he openly voiced it in vent during Hyjal trash because openly questioning authority isn't the way we do things. If he'd wanted to voice an opinion he could've easily whispered it to me. You made exact reference to what I said to him, so it leads me to believe that this was the reason you've taken this step.
Quote :
this is how we do it if you don’t like it I can always gkick you
This wasn't what lead to his dismissal contrary to what you've been told. His dismissal was decided upon due to his lack of fulfulling his duty in the raid. When we have 2 raid healers which are resto shaman / CoH priest, I shouldnt target Hackr who is / was a main tank healer and watch him raid heal while the main tank dies. This compounded with him telling our main pally tank how to tank while he wasn't performing his own duty were the reasons he was dismissed. Enjoy your application process and I wish you the best of luck.

I'd like to profess my deepest apologies to Z and the rest of Damage Done for posting this during your application process, however as I rarely get the chance to stop by your vent and talk to you all I thought this the best place to do it. I'm greatly disappointed the fashion in which our guild has been put down, as well as my competancy as a raid leader and/or guild master. If any of you would like to get in touch with me over this matter, Rishana Petrus and I do believe Z all have our vent info and you're more than welcome to stop by and discuss whats been said. Once again, my deepest apologies to Damage Done for airing this on your public forum, however it had to be laid to rest.

Thank you for your time

Considering I was the guild and raid leader for a hell of a long time, I'd say you definitely did not consort with me once, which is good considering how deep my loathing for Hustla runs (it would spill over into your guild).

He's talked to Z and a few other members several times in vent and gotten advice that helped IK kill Anetheron, KR, and Azgalor; it was after you were already gone when he began asking.

I don't want drama here. I gave my reasons for leaving to explain why I wanted to join DD and those are my opinions. At least be the bigger man and don't smear my application by stirring up community unrest.

Regarding Hackr... paraphrasing from memory, I believe your ventrilo quote was, "this is how we do it in our guild and I understand you did things differently in Narcism, but if you don't like it I will send you back there." I just don't see how that's warranted. Any DD members who want to check the veracity of my claim could of course consult Hackr personally, though I'd prefer he not be dragged into this.

In all honesty, the criticisms of my gear should have been addressed to me personally if they are that egregious. Unless I totally misrepresent myself, I don't think I did that poorly in the Damage Done SP raid I attended earlier this week. Any feedback would be appreciated. A quick check of my armory profile will show I am making gem and enchant improvements as suggested from the DD feedback I've gotten so far (thanks again).

As mature adults, the opinions of one person should not be the basis for a conflict in our respective communities, neither of which I assume I am (any longer) a member of. Hopefully, everyone reading this will value the opinions I've expressed in my application for what they are: my opinions.

You know, it appears I'm so out of the loop on current Gorg politics I'm actually glad.
